A tent sleeps two. That is the whole problem.

The single supplement is not a penalty for being alone, it is a camp recovering the second half of a bed nobody is in. Which means it can be waived in exactly one situation: when the camp is going to fill that room anyway. On set departures where we have done that, it goes.

Why this one costs less.

Every offer on this site has to survive being drawn as a chain. If it cannot, it is not an offer — it is a discount off a price somebody inflated first.

We set a departure

Fixed dates, a fixed route

Rather than building one trip for one person, we publish dates and fill them. Small numbers — a vehicle holds six comfortably and we would rather it held four.

The camp fills either way

So the empty half stops existing

When we are taking a block of rooms on known dates, the camp is not carrying the risk of a half-used tent. That is the only honest basis on which a supplement can be dropped.

You pay the per-person rate

And keep your own tent

You are not sharing a room with a stranger. You have the tent to yourself at the rate two people would each pay.

Why the supplement exists at all.

Worth understanding, because it tells you exactly when it can go and when anyone offering to waive it is moving the cost somewhere you cannot see.

The camp’s side

A tent has one price, not two

Camps cost their tents by the night, not by the head. Staff, laundry, water, the vehicle, the guide — a tent with one person in it costs almost exactly what a tent with two costs to run.

The maths

Half the revenue, all of the cost

So a solo guest at half the tent’s revenue is, for the camp, a loss against the same room sold to a couple. The supplement closes that gap. It is arithmetic rather than punishment.

When it can go

When the room was going to sell anyway

On a set departure where we have committed to the rooms, the camp is not exposed. That is the one situation in which waiving it costs nobody anything — which is why we only offer it there.

What this does and does not mean

You are not sharing a tent. No operator should ever put two strangers in a room to avoid a supplement, and we will not offer it. You have your own tent; what you share is the vehicle and the table.

Set departures mean set dates. The route and the days are fixed before you join. If you need a different length, a different park or a different month, this becomes a private trip and the supplement comes back — we will tell you the difference rather than quietly reprice it.

Peak dates rarely carry it. When camps are full anyway they have no reason to waive anything, and we will not pretend otherwise. The best solo value is in the shoulder months.

Is it for you?

We would rather lose the booking than sell you the wrong offer, because the wrong offer usually means the wrong trip.

Yes, if
  • You are happy to travel with a small group of strangers and eat dinner with them.
  • Your dates are flexible enough to fit a published departure.
  • You would rather spend the difference on a better camp than on a private vehicle.
  • It is your first solo trip and the idea of arranging everything alone is the part putting you off.
Probably not, if
  • You want to set your own pace, stop where you like and change your mind. That is a private trip and it is worth paying for.
  • You are a photographer. Sharing a vehicle is the single worst thing you can do to your photographs.
  • You need specific dates in July or August. Very little waives a supplement then.
  • The thought of five days of group meals is unappealing. It is a completely reasonable objection.

Tell us roughly when you can travel and how long

Set departures are dated. The first question is simply which ones you could make.

We tell you what is running and how full it is

Including how many are already booked and what the group looks like, so far as we are able to say.

You join at the per-person rate, with your own tent

No supplement, no room-sharing, and no surprise line appearing later.

Questions we get asked.

Will I be the only solo traveller?

Usually not — set departures attract solo travellers precisely because of this. We will tell you honestly what the group looks like when you ask, including if you would be the only one.

Can I get a private vehicle on a set departure?

That defeats the mechanism, and it would cost roughly what a private trip costs. If a private vehicle matters to you, we should build you a private trip and be straight about the supplement.

Is there an age range?

They vary and we will not pretend they are all the same. Ask about a specific departure and we will tell you what we know about who is on it.

What if a departure does not fill?

We run it anyway if it is confirmed, or we tell you early enough to change plans if it is not. What we will not do is quietly add the supplement back because numbers were short.
