Umbwe Route

The steepest and most direct way up Kilimanjaro: a narrow forest ridge from the south to Barranco in two days, then the southern circuit to Barafu. Quiet and dramatic — and only for fit trekkers who have been to altitude before.

IOverview

The steepest way up, and who it is not for.

Umbwe is the steepest and most direct route on Kilimanjaro. It climbs a narrow ridge through the southern forest, so steep in places that you pull yourself up on roots, and reaches Barranco, under the Breach Wall, on the second day. From there it joins the southern circuit — the Barranco Wall, Karanga, Barafu — and comes down the Mweka path. The first two days are among the quietest on the mountain.

It is also the route with the least time to acclimatise, and we say so first. It is only for fit, experienced trekkers who have been to altitude before and know how their body responds. Even then we will often suggest adding a day, or choosing Machame or Lemosho instead, which reach the same summit with far more time to adjust. If this is your first time high, please take one of those.

IIThe route

Straight up the south side, then round to Barafu.

Six mountain days and five nights in tents. About an hour by road from Moshi to Umbwe Gate, and about an hour back from Mweka Gate. The solid line is this plan; the dotted lines are the other roads through the region. Point at a day to see its leg.

Drawn to scale

Every metre up, and every metre down.

Umbwe gains height faster than any other route: from about 1,800 m at the gate to about 3,960 m at Barranco in two days, with no climb-high, sleep-low day before it. From Barranco it joins the southern circuit, but by then the fast start has been made. This is why we so often suggest an extra day.

IIIDay by day

Six days, one at a time.

Each day lands on top of the last as you scroll: honest road time, game time, meals and where you sleep. Times are door to door in a safari vehicle and move with the season and what you stop for.

  1. Morning

About an hour from Moshi through farm villages to Umbwe Gate, at about 1,800 m. Registration, and the porters weigh and load.

  2. Afternoon

Straight up a narrow ridge through dense forest, gaining about 1,050 m. Steep and sustained, with roots for handholds in places; slippery after rain.

  3. Evening

Umbwe Cave Camp, at about 2,850 m, in a small clearing on the ridge among the last big trees.

Pace

However fit you are, walk slowly. The steepness tempts people to push; the altitude punishes it two days later.

  3. Afternoon

Barranco, at about 3,960 m, where the Machame and Lemosho routes join. This is a big gain for the second day; headaches here are common, and you must tell your guide.

The fast start

In two days you have climbed over 2,100 m. This is the day an extra night would change most — see ‘Make it yours’.

What moves the price

What changes itHow much
  • Days on the mountain

Park fees are charged per person per day, so each extra day adds its own fees as well as crew wages.

  • How many climb together

The guide and much of the crew cost the same for two climbers or six, so the per-person price falls as the group grows.

  • The standard of camp

A private toilet tent, a larger mess tent or more space in the tents each add porters.

  • Hotel nights either side

The nights in Moshi or Arusha before and after are added at the level you choose.

  • Park fees

Fixed per person per day by the park, and the same whoever you book with. We show them as their own line.

What ‘private climb’ means on this trip

  • Tents. Your crew carries, pitches and strikes the camp every day. Tent type and how many share
  • Mess tent. Meals at a table, out of the wind. Confirm a mess tent with table and chairs is standard
  • Toilet. The camps have park long-drops. Whether a private toilet tent is standard or an extra
  • Food and water. Three cooked meals a day and treated drinking water. Tell us about diets early; supplies are bought before the climb.

VIIIWhen to go

Rated for this route, not for the country.

The dry months, January to early March and June to October, are the best on every route. On Umbwe they matter more than most: the forest ridge on the first day is steep, rooty and slippery when wet, and in the long rains of April and May we would not run it.

XIQuestions

The ones we are asked most.

Fit, experienced trekkers who have been to altitude before and know how they respond. It is the steepest route and gives the least time to acclimatise. If this is your first time high, we will suggest Machame or Lemosho instead, or at least adding a day — and we mean it.

No ropes and no technical climbing. The first day is steep forest with roots for handholds, and the Barranco Wall on day three is a scramble where you use your hands. Neither needs climbing experience; both need a head for steep ground.

You leave Barafu usually around midnight and climb in the dark to Stella Point on the crater rim, then along the rim to Uhuru Peak around dawn, and then all the way down to Mweka Camp. It is cold, slow and the hardest day most people have ever walked.

Acute mountain sickness can affect anyone, however fit, and fitness is no protection on a fast route like this one. Your guide checks everyone each evening and on the way up. If symptoms get worse, the answer is to go down, and we will. Whether to take medication such as acetazolamide is a decision for your own doctor. Oxygen and first-aid kit carried: ask us.

Tips for the crew are the cost people most often forget; we send a guideline with your booking. Sleeping bags, poles and warm jackets can be hired in Moshi if you do not want to bring your own.

Very. Steep, sustained climbing for hours on the first two days, then a summit night of twelve hours or more. Long hill days with a pack in the months before are the best preparation, and a recent trek at altitude matters as much as fitness.
