Water, forest and birds, half an hour from town.

Lake Duluti is a small crater lake just off the road east of Arusha, near Tengeru, ringed by forest and overlooked by Mount Meru. It is quiet, green and close — the kind of place people are surprised to find so near a busy town. The morning is spent partly on the water in a canoe and partly on foot on the path that circles the lake, with a local guide who knows the birds and the trees.

It is a gentle half day, not an adventure, and that is the point: it suits the morning after a long-haul arrival, a gap between a climb and a safari, or anyone who wants to stretch their legs before or after days in a vehicle. It is not a wildlife trip — there are no big animals here — but birders will find plenty to look at.

Pick-up from your hotel in Arusha. East along the main road towards Tengeru, then a short turn-off down to the lake.

At the lake you meet the local guide, pay or confirm the lake fees, and get a short safety briefing before the canoes.

On the water. The lake is small and sheltered, and paddling is easy even if you have never done it. Look for birds on the reed edges and in the overhanging trees, and for Meru above the far rim when the cloud allows.

Back on shore and on foot: the path circles the lake through the forest, up and down along the crater wall, with the guide pointing out birds, trees and what the local people use them for.

Back at the vehicle, and the half-hour drive to Arusha.

Early is better

Morning is when the birds are busiest and the water calmest, and Meru is often in cloud by late morning. An afternoon version is possible; ask us.

Rated for this route, not for the country.

Duluti works in every month. The dry months, June to October, give the firmest paths and the clearest views of Meru across the water. In the long rains, April and May, the forest path gets muddy and slippery and afternoons can be wet — go early and bring shoes you do not mind ruining.
