The town before the safari, at an easy pace.

Most visitors see Arusha only through the window on the way to the parks. This half day gives it a few hours of its own: the Cultural Heritage Centre, a large gallery of Tanzanian and East African art with craft shops attached, on the western side of town; then the centre itself, with the central market, the clock tower and the busy streets around them; then lunch in town.

It is modest and meant to be. It suits the first day after a late arrival, a last morning before an evening flight, or anyone who would like to know a little about the place before or after a safari. Shopping at the Centre is entirely optional — there is no pressure from us to buy anything, and the gallery is worth the visit on its own.

    The Cultural Heritage Centre, on the western side of town on the road out towards the parks. Time to walk through the gallery at your own pace, and to browse the craft shops if you want to.

    Back into the centre. The central market: fruit, vegetables, spices, fabric and everything else, with your guide to explain and translate.

  4. About 12:15

    A short walk to the clock tower and the streets around it, the old centre of town.

  5. About 12:45

    Lunch in town. Your guide can suggest somewhere local or somewhere familiar; you choose.

  6. About 14:00

    Back to your hotel.

Keep your bag closed and your phone in a front pocket, as in any busy market. Ask before photographing people or their stalls — your guide will help.

This one runs in any month: most of it is indoors, in the market or in the vehicle. In the long rains, April and May, the streets can be wet and muddy underfoot, and a morning start usually misses the afternoon showers. The market is busiest in the morning.
