The crater in one day, and what that costs you.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a sealed volcanic bowl with grassland, a soda lake, swamp and a small forest on its floor, and animals that live there all year: buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hyena, lion and, with luck, black rhino. Seen from the rim and then from the floor, it is one of the great sights of Africa.

As a day trip from Arusha it is a long day. You leave in the dark, drive about three hours to the highlands, spend the hours the rules allow on the floor, and drive about three hours back. It works, and many people are glad they did it. But a night in Karatu, twenty minutes from the gate, makes it an easy day instead — and adds a second park on the way. If you can spare the night, we would take it.

Before dawn
Your guide collects you from your hotel in Arusha in the dark, with a packed breakfast. West on tarmac to Makuyuni, past Mto wa Mbu and up the Rift escarpment to Karatu.
Early morning
Through the conservation area gate and up through forest to the rim, which is often in cloud and always cold at this hour. On a clear morning the view down into the crater stops everyone.
Morning
Down the descent road onto the floor. Grassland, the soda lake, the swamp and the forest: buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hyena and lions, and your guide scanning the open ground for black rhino.
Midday
Picnic lunch at the designated site on the crater floor. Keep it inside the vehicle until you sit down; the kites are quick.
Afternoon
More time on the floor, then up the ascent road before the time limit runs out.
Evening
Back down through Karatu and Mto wa Mbu to Arusha, arriving in the evening. Most people sleep in the vehicle for part of it.

The six-hour rule

Time on the crater floor is limited per vehicle, currently about six hours. On a day trip the drive decides when you arrive, so you may have less than the full allowance. A night in Karatu fixes that.

Conservation and crater fees
Set by the conservation authority, per person and per vehicle, and the same whoever you book with. They are a large part of this day’s price, and we show them as their own lines.
A night on the way
Sleeping in Karatu adds a night’s lodging but shortens the day and gives you more time on the floor.
Where we collect you
Arusha hotels are the standard pick-up. Anywhere further out adds to an already long day.

Rated for this route, not for the country.

The crater floor holds animals all year, so there is no bad month for the animals. June to October is dry and the clearest; it is also the busiest, with more vehicles on the floor. In the long rains, April and May, the roads down and up can be slippery and the rim is often in cloud. The rim is cold early in the morning in any month.

Getting there.

From your hotel

Pick-up anywhere in Arusha

Your guide collects you from your hotel before dawn and brings you back in the evening. From Moshi it is not a sensible day trip; ask us about a night on the way.

From the airport

Kilimanjaro International (JRO)

Not on a travel day. Land the day before and spend a night in Arusha, or better, start a short safari from the airport.

With a safari or climb

Better as part of one

The crater is on every northern safari, usually with a night in Karatu. If you are coming for Kilimanjaro, a short safari afterwards is the easier way to see it.
