A day in the hills with the people who live there.

The Monduli highlands rise west of Arusha, above the plains the road to the parks crosses. Monduli Juu — ‘upper Monduli’ — is Maasai country: cattle, homesteads spread across green ridges, and wide views down to the lowlands on a clear day. The visit is arranged through community guides from the area, who lead the walk, introduce you, and explain what you are seeing.

This is not a performance put on for visitors. You follow daily life as it happens that day — cattle going out, water being fetched, children coming home from school — and you are a guest. Photographs of people are taken only with their permission, and a community fee is paid for the visit. If you would like a day with more walking and more conversation than a roadside village stop can give, this is it.

About 1½ hours each way from Arusha; tarmac for most of it, then a slower, rougher road up into the hills. The solid line is the way there and back; the dotted lines are other roads nearby.

    Pick-up from your hotel in Arusha and west on the main road, then off it towards Monduli and up into the hills.

  2. About 09:30

    In Monduli Juu you meet the community guides. They explain how the visit works, what is welcome and what is not, and the community fee is settled unless it is already on your quote.

  3. About 10:00

    The walk: along cattle paths and over the ridges, with the guides explaining the land, the plants and how people use them, and stopping where the views open out over the plains.

  4. About 12:30

    Lunch in the hills, from the packed lunch we bring.

  5. About 13:30

    Time around the homesteads as a guest — conversation through your guides, and whatever is happening that day. Photographs only when people say yes.

  6. About 15:00

    Goodbyes, and back down the hill road to the tarmac.

  7. About 16:30

    Dropped at your hotel in Arusha.

Rated for this route, not for the country.

The highlands can be visited in any month, but the dry months, June to October, and the warm spell from December to February are easiest: firm paths, clear views, and a road up the hill that behaves. In the long rains, April and May, the upper road can be slippery and slow and the views are often in cloud. It is cooler up here than in Arusha in every month.

Pick-up

From your hotel in Arusha

We collect you early and bring you back in the late afternoon. About an hour and a half each way.

From Moshi

A longer day

Possible, but it adds roughly an hour and a half of driving each way. From Moshi, Materuni is the closer village day.

With a safari

Before or after

Monduli is off the road the safaris take west, so the day fits well before or after the northern parks. Ask us about folding a visit into a longer safari instead.

No. The visit is arranged through community guides, and you see the day as it is. Some days there is a lot going on; some days it is quiet. Both are real.

A community fee is paid for every visit, and it appears as its own line on your quote. Ask us and we will tell you how the community uses it.

Of the hills, freely. Of people, only with their permission, asked each time — your guides will help. Some people will say no, and that is the end of it.

A few hours on hill paths, some steep, at a higher altitude than Arusha. Anyone reasonably fit manages at a steady pace. Tell us about knees or breathing concerns and we will shorten it.

Walking shoes, layers — it is cooler up here — and modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, out of respect.
